We learned and reviewed the history of the underground railroad - why/how it started and about the people involved. We took a look at quilt samples and learned their meanings as they related to the underground railroad.
We also learned about the civil war - mainly the soldiers uniforms and things they carried in their bag. This was the part the kids really seemed to enjoy as there were uniforms for them to wear!
Between these two presentations we were able to look at the exhibit on Abraham Lincoln. There are many fascinating artifacts in the collection. There is a book of Abraham Lincoln's on display there - one that he read and learned from as he only went to school for 2 years. Did you know he was also a land surveyor? Many fascinating things to learn and see.
This was the first time Mitchell has been to this museum and the second for Matthew. Mitchell enjoyed everything! He seems to soak up information although it takes a while to exhibit itself - just today we read a picture book on Paul Revere (one he picked from the library) and it told of the Declaration of Independence and Mitchell said, "Thomas Jefferson wrote that!"
Speaking of Mitchell - the quote of the day - when telling his dad what he saw at the museum he said "we learned about ABE WASHINGTON!"(now there is discussion about whether he really said this-I remember hearing him say it)
I'd say there are many facts running around in his little head.
The kids were asked to look at two pictures similar to those at the top. They were asked, "which one of these is Abraham Lincoln?" Can you guess their response?

The one with the beard?
Hey, weren't you at the Museum too?
Yeah, But I don't remember what Mitchell said????
I thought so...he guessed the one on the left as well as everyone else in our group. They(kids) were quite surprised to find out the one on the right -w/o the beard-was Lincoln too!
